Capital of Peru, an industrial city
(textiles, chemicals, glass, cement) with its
port at Callao; population (1988) 418,000,
metropolitan area 4,605,000. Founded by the
conquistador Pizarro 1535, it was rebuilt
after destruction by an earthquake 1746.
Survivals of the colonial period are the
university 1551, cathedral 1746, government
palace (the rebuilt palace of the viceroys),
and the senate house (once the headquarters
of the Inquisition).
